Yeah I have been nervous about the weather all week. Saturday is now also calling for rain. It's going to be a game time decision. You know how these weather reports go. They all seem to say different things.

    Buoy Weather

    Saturday 11/28
    Morning
Light winds with a slight chop. Moderate long period swell.
    Winds: W 7 to 10 knots
    Seas: W 7 feet at 14 sec.

    Afternoon
Light and variable winds with smooth seas. Moderate long period swell.
Winds: SW 3 to 5 knots
    Seas: W 7 feet at 13 sec.

If this report is actually accurate with the 14 sec interval and relatively light wind could be good fishing!

I moved the Libre over to Dana Hotel Marina this morning and it was flat calm seas. It was so clear I could see Catalina and San Clemente. We are pre-fishing tomorrow. I will post a report.

We shoved off at 9am. Went around the corner to Seaforth area to pick up some bait. Gigantic horse dines 6"-8" long and tiny pinner chovies. They were lively and zero died on us, but they were either too small or too big.

There was definitely a 6-8ft swell. Inside the MB channel waves were breaking on each side! We timed it good and punched it in between sets. That channel is sketchy! On the outside was nice long intervals of rolling swell and no wind.

We wanted to fish Mission Beach side of Jetty, but swell was way to big so the first stop was PB Pier area. Fished it up down and side ways 30' up to 80' for nothing. Moved up to PB point. I got a nice sand bass and that was it. Moved out to LJ area for some stones I know so my dad could take home some more fish. We picked up two nice sculpin and a good sized salmon grouper. He was pumped. But no Hali for today.

So now the fun part! At the same are my friend Gene decides to grab a huge horse dine and drop it down, but not all the way to the bottom. After a few minutes he gets hit hard!!!! He is pulling on something very heavy. He has 20# line. Nothing's happening. No head shake. Just massive dead weight. After about 10 minutes we start to wonder if it's just a bunch of kelp. Then out of no where his drag starts ripping. I fire up the boat and start backing down on it. Gene starts making up some ground. We repeat this cycle for about 30 minutes of reeling and then the fish making a run. Then the fish decides it's had enough and spools Gene and breaks off quicker than I can get the boat moving fast enough. Never saw the fish, but I think it was a huge black sea bass. What do you guys think?

We were going to continue on to Scripps pier and blacks, but we decided to call it a day and get ready for the tournament. I saw the another Blackman boat Know Now fishing in the same area in LJ.

Great time on the water with my dad who is 78 and my friend Gene who is 71. I am 40 and hope to be fishing at their age! Tomorrow we are heading straight for N. LJ.

    Default Rockfishing

We went out Rockfishing. The drift was SLOW and not consistant for me. I was fishing with 8 oz and my friend was using 1 lb. No problem staying on the bottom. Nothing of size for us. Saw Toni at the bait barge and off LJ.

Wow Tony that does sound like a big black. If it was, you had no chance with 20lbs to get him off the bottom. Sounds like a nice day.

    Welcome to the site

Good to see you out there Phil. Russ, I talk to a few other fisherman about it and they said the Black Sea Bass have been making a strong come back. Yeah there was no way were getting that fish and I'm glad it broke off. Not sure I wanted to deal with reviving a huge Black Sea Bass.

I fished in the Halibut Classic today. Horrible weather. It was Mission Bay fishing only. We tried hard from 6:30am to 3pm. All we got was one legal sized Sand Bass and a small Bass. Winds had to be at least 30mph. It was blowing hard. Fast drifts, cold, rainy. Out of 41 boats in the tourney only 4 halibut were kept and they were all barley legal. The winning Hali was 6.2lbs - 25.5" long and was caught under the second bridge and they were right next to us. I got several good bites, but they all ended up being short bites. Frustrating.

Not sure if anyone heard...4 boats decided to go outside. All made it back safe except a 29' Defiance flipped. 6 people were on board and all were rescued by coast guard. One boat was a 60' sportfisher. The other two boats had lifeguard escorts follow them in. Crazy!

My buddy and I won a lot off cool prizes. Even though the weather was bad and the fish weren't biting we had a good time.
