    Default 23 blackman flybridge

What would be the best new diesel engine and outdrive combo for the the blackman 23 fly. The new D4? or would a 6 cyl be better. Also, would the new super charged d3 with 160 hp do the trick? Does anybody know what the ball park cost is for a new engine package.

Just curious and looking at a possible fixer upper.

    Thanks!

The D3 is about 300 pound lighter and delivers the same HP as the 40a most of us have in the 23'. Taking #300 off the back end would most likely give you an easy cruise of 20-22 knots if not higher.

The D4 is #300 heavier than the 40, and delivers 60 more HP. This would be more like having the same HP as the 26' with 3000 pounds less boat to push around. You might be looking at a 30 knot boat with that package.

Default best engine for 23' billfisher

Don retrofitted the 200 horse 6 cylinder diesel in my 23' billfisher and I could'nt be happier. It weighs a couple hundred lbs. more than the 350 chevy and the extra weight made it a 100% better boat in a following sea. Therefore I would'nt reccomend anything lighter as in the 4 cyl. Also talked to the Volvo supplier for Blackman and he also confirmed that he thought the 6cyl. would be a better choice especially if you fish in Mexico as I do. Plan on spending at least $25.000. Good luck.

    Default D4s are the Future!

You can't get 6 cylinder 41s or 43s anymore; Steve says figure up to 30K for a D4 repower. They include a new helm and steering system which comes with the D4. I personally would stay away from a supercharger, just more maintenence and something expensive to repair later. The performance numbers are astounding, I think the $1500 bronze props have alot to due with it. I'm getting close to 5000 hours on my second repower so I need a little time to save 30K for the job but I think it will be worth it in the long run. I saw one running at the shop and the only drawback I saw was vibration, at idle these buggers shake a little bit. I'm trying to sneak a ride on a sea trial and will report back what happens.

Here is a site with engines/pricing but it does not have the D4. http://www.accesscom.net/~tropical/volvo/dengines.html
I think the D6 is much heavier and larger than a 40 series engine. Yes, (as I looked through my literature pile) the D6 -310 weighs 1446 lbs. I think the 40 series is a little over 1000 lbs.
Another option would be the Cummins/ mercruiser diesel: 4.2 EI @250 hp. It weighs 1216 lbs and is almost identical in size to the volvo 41P.
    Fun junk to ponder.

Careful on the D3. I talked to Paul at McDonnell Marine. He said that this is a marinized automotive engine that's good for 3000 hours and not rebuildabled. In effect, it's a throw away motor.

Everyone raves about the D4 and D6, but they are expensive to purchase and expensive to run. You must run these engines using Volvo's engine oil which costs $13 a gallon. Same thing with the new drives. They require a Volvo synthetic gear oil which costs $115/gallon and they use 5 quarts. Change interval is still 100 hours. Ouch. Those 41s with a DP290 are looking better all the time.

'LUPE: Where is your 23 flybridge with the 41 installation? I want to see this set up. My original plan was to rebuild a 41a and swap out the 40a and 280dp in my 23 outerbanks. But the 40a just keeps chuggin along.......RT
